 A WINTER MORNING

A winter morning is misty and cold. There is dense fog everywhere. Sometimes the fog is so dense that the sun rays cannot get through it. Even things at a little distance can hardly be seen. Bird’s chirping is not heard. The cow and other animals cannot come out. But it is not so every morning. Dew drops fall on leaves and blades of grass at night. They look like glittering pearls when the rays of the morning sun fall on them. Village children and people have hardly warm clothes. They gather straw and dry leaves to make fire to warm themselves. The old and the poor bask in the sun in order to warm themselves. People in general and children get up late. So everyone is busy in taking breakfast, dressing and getting ready for going to their respective places. In a winter morning one can enjoy delicious and sweet cakes, pias of date juice and many other things. The scene of the winter morning vanishes as the day advances. The sun goes up and the fog melts. A winter morning is enjoyable in many respects.

A WEDDING CEREMONY I ATTENDED

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to enjoy the feasts and festivities that were provided on the occasion of the marriage ceremony of the daughter of Mr. A. Rahim, one of our rich and respectable neighbours. A big pandal with shamiana above was erected. A big and tastefully designed gate was made at the entrance of the pandal. In the evening the big house of Mr. Rahim, the pandal and the gate were illuminated with multi coloured electric bulbs in a manner that made a splendid show. Mr. Rahim invited his friends and relatives to attend the wedding of his daughter. The invited guests began to come in the evening in motor cars, scooters or rickshaws. The bridgroom’ s party started from  Maghbazar at 7 p.m. The party proceeded in a motor cavalcade and reached the bride’s house at 7-45 pm. Then the bridal guests were given seats with great decorum. The bridegroom had his special seat prepared and decorated for him. About one thousand guests attended the ceremony. A little while later sweet sherbet was served to the guests. After a short time the guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner. Then betel leaf and cigarettes were distributed and the guests went for relaxation. They left their respective seats and entered upon friendly chats and gossips in small groups. I felt delighted that the occasion gave me a an opportunity to meet many at one place and to enjoy a pleasant evening.

A STREET BEGGAR

The beggar who begs alms in the street is called a street beggar. He is seen sitting or standing everywhere in the street of towns or cities. His hair is unabashed and without oil. He is seen in patched up and torn clothes. His clothes are very dirty and bad smell emits from his clothes, Sometimes a street beggar is alone and sometimes in a company. A street beggar may be able bodied, blind, lame or crippled. A street beggar has a bag hanging down his shoulder. When a passer -by walks past him, he stretches his begging bowl for alms. Sometimes he is seen reciting some sentences of the Holy Quran or the Kalema and asks for money in the name of Allah and His holy prophet. However, some passers- by give him some coins and some leave being annoyed at his loud shouts. A street beggar prays for the passers -by who help him. If anyone refuses to give him something, he silently leaves the place and goes to another. Sometimes a street beggar earns a lot.

A RICKSHAW PULLER

He supports his family through much hardship. He has no rickshaw of his own. He toils hard. In all weathers good and bad he is seen carrying passengers. He bargains with his passengers. He demands more when the weather is very hot or foul. Sometimes he tries to cheat passengers. But most often he is by passengers. A rickshaw puller is seen sleeping in his rickshaw beneath a tree or sitting idly in his rickshaw. Though he drives a rickshaw from morning till late night, he leads a very miserable life. His life is full of sorrows and sufferings. He cannot enjoy peace and happiness. If he becomes sick, he cannot drive his rickshaw and earn money. So he and his family starve. If he can earn more than his expectation, his face smiles. But this opportunity is very rare in his life.

A moonlit night is really charming and enjoyable. It presents a beautiful sight. It dazzles our eyes and soothes our heart. In a moonlit night the moon looks like a disk of silver. The moon bathes the whole world with her silvery light. The watery places, canals, rivers and tanks seem to smile on a moonlit night. The grand spectacles the canals, rivers and tanks present cannot be described in words. The whole nature looks bright and appears in celestial light. People of all ages enjoy a moonlit night. Young boys play and little boys and girls make merriments and amuse themselves. A moonlit night is really enjoyable to a newly married couple. Men and women of middle ages cannot come out of doors. They pass some hours in gossiping and story telling and enjoy the night. Poets of all languages have sung highly of a moonlit night. Even lower animals come out at night and little insects also fly here and there. A moonlit night is pleasant and fine indeed.

A FISHERMAN

A fisherman is a person who earns his livelihood by catching and selling fishes. Generally a fisherman lives by the rivers, big canals, marshy lands and seas for his professional advantages. A fisherman lives with his family. He works hard all day and all night. He is a always busy in making his fishing nets, repairing them, taking care of his fishing boat, dying and painting them. He passes most of his time in fishing in the river and in the sea. Sometimes he goes in the deep sea for fishing and his family becomes anxious about his safe return. He faces dangers. He has no radio set and motor boats. He cannot listen to the weather warning. So he cannot return to the shore safely. A fisherman leads a very poor life. He has hardly nets and boats of his own. He is not given loans on easy terms. His face beams with smile when he catches a lot of fish. A fisherman does much good to us by supplying us with fish. So a fisherman plays an important role like a farmer.

A FARMER

The person who does the work of farming is known as a farmer. In Bangladesh the life of a farmer is not so good. He inherits a little land. He is illiterate. He does not know how to plough his land scientifically. He cannot apply scientific method. He has only a pair of bullocks and some handmade tools. Often he has not enough money to buy seeds, fertilizer or pesticide. As a result he cannot produce more food for himself and his family. He cannot make proper use of his land. He gets up early in the morning, goes to his land, ploughs it, sows the seeds and weeds out. He comes home at noon, eats his meal, takes rest and again goes to his land. He is born poor. Sometimes he takes a loan from the money lenders. If he cannot repay the loan, he sells the piece of land. A farmer is left on the mercy of nature. He has pleasures and pains in life. If he gets a good harvest, his face beams with joy. On the other hand if the crops are not good, his sorrows know no bounds. He and his family starve. He leads a very poor life. Though he works hard, he cannot lead a decent life. He cannot raise his head from the fear of wants. His life is meant for struggle of existence.

 A DAY LABOURER

A day labourer is he who does heavy manual labour in various fields. He is quite known to all. He is to be healthy, strong and stout. He lives with his family in a slum. He gets up early in the morning and goes out in search of work. He works hard from dawn to dusk for his employer and gets his wages in the evening. Then he goes to market, buys his daily necessaries and returns to his slum. He is always dependent on his employer. When he gets more work, he earns more and then he and the members of his family eat to their heart’s content. Sometimes he and his family go without food if he cannot manage work. However he is in great demand in harvesting season. The life of a day labourer is full of sorrows and sufferings. He can hardly enjoy peace and happiness. In all weathers-good and bad he works hard all day long and earns his livelihood by the sweat of his brow. He does not know what rest is. Though the service of a day labourer is of great importance, he is very much neglected. He is ill paid and can hardly make both ends meet. He is not held in due respect. So we should have soft feeling for him so that he can lead a decent life with dignity.

Now-a-days a book fair has become very popular. It has created a sense of interest for books among the general mass. In a book fair a lot of pavilions are set up. All sorts of books-fictions, text books, dramas, children books, reference books etc are displayed. There are also food and drink stalls. A book fair becomes crowd specially in the evening. Both male and female customers gather in a book fair. The writers also visit the fair regularly. Seminars and cultural programmes are also held. A book fair reminds us that books are our best companions. They are always at our side when we are in danger. They change our outlook on life and widen our domain of knowledge. It is books which help us to forget jealousy, malice and superstition. Again we get these best friends at a cheaper rate from a book fair.

A bus stand is a place where service buses stop and start from. After a fixed time a good number of up and down buses touch at a bus stand at different hours of the day and night. In cities there are sheds for passengers at a bus stand. It is a temporary shelter for passengers. Passengers wait for some time to get on a bus. In some bus stands there are counters for tickets. Passengers stand in a line for buying tickets. Sometimes there is exchange of hot words if anybody breaks the line. A bus stand is a busy place. One bus comes and another starts for. The passengers coming here have no time to talk or to look at others. When a bus comes or starts for, Passengers become busy in procuring a seat. They push one another to get into it. Ladies find it too difficult to get on a bus. The drivers and conductors are also very busy. Their shouts are heard. The try to get as many passengers as they can. Generally a bus is always jam-packed and it is more jam-packed during office hours. So very few people can get into it. A bus stand is always noisy. There are road –side, tea-stall, small shops, hawkers selling betel leaf and cigarette at a bus stand. Magazines and seasonal fruits are also sold here. Usually a village market is divided into three sections open space, temporary shops and permanent shops. Vegetable, milk, fish, fruit, curry and other essential things are sold in the open space. From the grocers’ people buy oil, salt, onion, garlic, ginger, pulse etc. In the permanent shops cloth, wheat, shoes, rice, flour, ghee, spices and different stationary items are sold. A village market is very useful and important in the life of the villagers. Here they meet their kith and kin and variety of people. The villagers sell their surplus products and buy their daily necessaries. It saves time and money of the villagers.

It protects the nib from being damaged. The cap is screwed with the main body. It is with the help of the clip that one holds a fountain pen on the edge of his pocket. He likes to bargain with the passengers for his charge. If any passenger brings charges against him of his misbehavior, the passenger is sure to be harassed by the porter and his associates. The income of a railway porter is very low. Yet he renders a great service to people.

Traffic jam is a long line of vehicles that cannot move or that can only move very slowly because there is so much traffic on the road. Traffic jam is a common affair in the big cities and towns. It is one of the major problems of modern time. The causes of traffic jam are many. In proportion to our population roads have not increased. The roads are all the same. There are many unlicensed vehicles which should be brought under control .The drivers are not willing to obey the traffic rules. They want to drive at their sweet will. Overtaking tendency also causes traffic jam .The number of traffic police is insufficient. At office time traffic jam is intolerable.  Sometimes traffic jam is so heavy that it blocks half a kilometer. It kills our valuable time and our work is hampered. It causes great sufferings to the ambulance carrying dying patients and the fire brigade vehicles. However, this problem can be constructed. One way movement of vehicles should be introduced.  Traffic rules should be imposed strictly so that the drivers are bound to obey them. Sufficient traffic police should be posted on important points. Unlicensed vehicles should be removed. After doing all these things we can hope to have a good traffic system for our easy and comfortable movement.

He brings toys, sweets and other things for children and sells them at a fixed price at a good rate. He also brings bangles, ribbons, clothing’s , fruits, utensils, fancy, goods and things of domestic uses for women. He speaks in different ways to draw the attention of his customers. A hawker also knows the time / hour of his business. He does not come when women are free from their household work and duties.
